of course i enjoy the atmosphere and concepts, but i don't think they cohere together, and i think it doesn't live up to its potential

outside of dedicated tracks for something like the threefold melody, hornet doesn't interact with the game's music. there is also no tie between her, the main story, and the theme of music. she has the needolin, and haunted beasts sing to her, but her *struggle* isn't connected to song in any way.

I mean, I have complaints on this level as well. not that any one of those elements is bad, but for example, I don't feel like the connection between game music, narrative music (strings, bells, etc.) and the player is strong enough

the crazy hitbox that prevents you from attacking below it or even just stand in front of it when it's still isn't telegraphed.

Hollow Knight Silksong is the best worst game I’ve played in years. I almost hated the last 15 hours entirely, but I couldn’t put it down either. From a game design perspective, it’s just flawed. Great enemies though. A shame.

That's not how it works. A trailer wouldn't show you a holistic picture of what the game is like at any one point in its playthrough, it doesn't show you the totality of mechanics and how they connect. Projects are promising and come out like crap all the time.

I do agree that it's harmonic in some cases, but for double damage, Hornet isn't actually more fragile than the Knight was, despite what people say. She herself and many around her say she is surprisingly hardy, and while she might be weakened, that's already in the amount of HP she has at start.

I don't think, in most cases, the narrative justifies things people don't like in silksong. Yes, it's a dangerous pilgrimage, but so is Hallownest a dangerous journey. If you listen to the pilgrims, most of them die to exhaustion or wild animals, not Haunted guards

well, for the same reason people not liking something isn't indication of bad design, people liking it isn't indication of good design, so I don't think it necessarily matters if even the majority of players enjoy bad design.

Please don't kill me, but Silksong is the perfect example of a game that should have been heavily play-tested. The single most bizarre design decisions I have ever seen in a video game, and it's like bonkers choices thrown at you constantly with zero balancing done. 6 years does not equate to good.

no, that's exactly what's being said "silksong is big and good for $20 so gamers won't won't to buy other games", hirohitosystem is saying it won't happen. and yeah, it won't, no more than the status quo and the trends already cause

if indie developers generally price how they need to price, people will buy the games. there are millions of games and millions of gamers, people will either buy what they can afford or they are in the set that doesn't buy games.

their ROI is finite because they had to pay for their livelihood and a ton of contractors in the process of development. you're also being alarmist. hollow knight was a smashing hit but it didn't cause the death of indie development with their 15 million sales at $7-15 prices.
