I've done cleanups for these. We were briefed that in order to properly remove them you have to take the whole starfish (can't break the appendages) else they will release reproductive cells in defense

They really are. I was using a 60mm macro lens and if I remember correctly upon advise we were told to set our camera to manual focus, which meant a fixed focus inside the housing because AF would be really tricky to pull off π±
