The difference in their character, motivation, and ultimate overall personality is pretty stark once you get through the first five or so episodes. They’re such completely different people, even though they share a name.

If you can do something that makes someone smile, then do that thing.

Person to person, kindness doesnt have to be big gestures and statements. It can be a hug, or a compliment, a thank you, or as simple as acknowledgement.

She wrote Cinderella when she was 16, I think.

And that's not nothing.

Do I think too much about this?

Maybe. But as a kid, I saw both RT and SDFM, and the differences were clear to me, even then.

And having dealt with my own deep yearning, hurt, and growth, they're even clearer, today.

The Minmei we meet in SDFM has a deep, deep yearning and hurt buried in her, and we only rarely see it. Cinderella. Love Drifts Away. Angel's Paints.

Saying "The Pawn Becomes The Queen" is a little trite, but I think it fits.

We like SDFM Minmei because she hurts, and loves, and GROWS. (13/?)

In RT, she doesn't get anywhere near the development she gets in SDFM - she sings her songs, and they are what they are. They're bubblegum popaganda, and in the context of the show, that's fine.

But they're HERS and they always were.

In SDFM, they were never hers. (12/?)

Angel's Paints is about finding yourself and your own path. It's the last song she sings before she leaves Earth.

This is something we would never get in RT: a Minmei that figures out who she is, who she needs to be, and saves HERSELF. Not the show, the "sequels" or the books do this. (11/?)

The next time we see her is in Flashback 2012. What's the first song we hear? "Angel's Paints." (yes, I know it's technically after DYRL, but come with me)

What's that song about?

Living life after grief. Discovering your way.

Repainting the world any way you want, even if you're sad.

And SDFM is OKAY with that. She doesn't just smile it all away and say "I'm going to go out there and keep being the voice of the war," she asks "when I figure out who I am and what I sing, can I come with you?"

At the end of SDFM, Minmei tells Hikaru and Misa that she's going to go off and write HER songs, and find out what they are. She's spent the last several years being SOMEONE ELSE. An image. A tulpa, really, created as an image of what was needed at the time.

She doesn't know who she is. (8/?)

SDFM Minmei is a child, run away from home to live with her aunt & uncle, who wants to sing her songs and tell her stories. RT Minmei is there with the blessing of her entire family.

Both get caught up in a war machine. One does it willingly. The other does it so she can sing SOMETHING. (7/?)

Is "Love Drifts Away" one of hers? That's entirely possible. It's melancholy, and like Cinderella, about loss and grief.

Compare it to "My Boyfriend's A Pilot" or "Zero-G Love."

The difference is staggering.

And so is the difference in RT and Macross versions. (6/?)

In Macross, Minmei is an unexpected fluke, and, most importantly, a PAWN.

For almost the entire show, she is singing songs written by someone else, for morale and propaganda purposes.

The first song we hear her sing - Cinderella - is the only song she sings that is HERS. (5/?)

If she has any doubts, it's only at the end, when the script writers couldn't get around the fact that Kyle was abusing her, and she begs Rick to run away with her. But even so, the doubts are superficial. She wants to have that happy, sunny, unending June.
