BRITISH NEUTRALITY The UK Supreme Court's ruling of April 16*h is a disgraceful assault by the British state upon the dignity, humanity, and rights of trans women. This is not the pursuit of justice. This is a calculated escalation of state violence, a ruling soaked in reaction, an act of patriarchal authoritarianism, executed under the pretence of safeguarding cis women but, in truth, exposing how little the capitalist state cares for any of us. The ruling was not impartial legal reasoning, but a show trial. Trans voices were silenced, a trans judge was denied the right to speak, and three of the four interveners are anti-trans bigots. The British state does not seek truth or equality, it seeks control.

BIOLOGICAL TRUTH The truth is that womanhood cannot be reduced to mere biology, and certainly not biology at birth. As Marxists we understand that essentialism will confine swathes of society to poverty and oppression. Throughout history, powerful men have used "biology" to argue that the Irish are prone to alcoholism, Black Africans are able to withstand more pain, and women are weaker. And now, to the shame of us all, so-called feminists are claiming that trans women are guaranteed to be devious abusers and "biological women" are defined by chromosomes alone. The British state seeks to divide the working class, to impose biological essentialism on us all. Not in the name of equality but to entrench class domination.

A SLIPPERY SLOPE This ruling will not protect women, it will harm them, especially those who are already most at risk. Trans women already face violence, poverty, medical neglect and housing insecurity. This worsens the oppression of trans women on the basis of biological essentialism. Already, the British Transport Police have already changed their policy so that a trans woman with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) will be searched by men. This decision was taken within 2 days of the ruling. This emboldens every landlord, boss, cop and bureaucrat who seeks to discriminate and exclude. It will not stop with trans women, it will further marginalise intersex people, non-binary people and any woman who does not conform to gender norms.

This ruling is an attack on trans women and the trans community. Transgender people are a vulnerable section of the working class and we reject all attempts to dismiss and sideline this ruling as irrelevant to the working class struggle.

It remains to be seen how long the ceasefire will last, as israel has repeatedly demonstrated that it is too single-mindedly genocidal to accept past agreements. Indeed Israel’s assault on Palestine continues even as the agreement is being signed today.

It will likely take years to make a full accounting of israel and the west’s crimes, and the US has made it clear they will oppose any attempt to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Western media still claim that the death toll in Gaza is around 40 thousand, a figure that hasn't moved since the start of 2024. In reality, the means to count the dead was destroyed alongside every hospital. Better estimates put the death toll between 200 and 400 thousand.

With both the US and israel in economic crisis, it seems they cannot afford to continue their genocide unabated, and despite the entire western war machine devoting every effort to eradicating the population of Gaza, they have failed, and the Palestinian people stand defiant.

The fact that the biden administration could have made israel accept the deal at any point before this is proof enough of the blood on their hands, and exposes the soulless cynicism of every liberal who said that western leaders were powerless to stop them.
