If your job is wanting you to learn new tech. Block off time on your calendar and learn the new tech on the job. Once 5pm hits, log off. You have a life to live!

Why do we need state files when Azure, AWS and even Hyper-V know what it is hosting?

Pull the information, check against a config file, deploy.

Simple, clean and efficient.

IaC from an infrastructure and security perspective means so much more and Terraform is not "what you write" is the environment. You have drift and name other issues natively to the product.

I think it is time we move on to the next era of infrastructure management.

After working with Terraform for name years now. I have grievances. Most of them being, the tool is marketed as something it is not. And it is glorified by the community for something it is not.

It requires so much care and feeding that any infrastructure engineer can't just pick it up.

I'm curious, how much SysAdmin content have you seen? I see a large amount of folks creating content for Cybersecurity and Development. Not much SysAdmin content. So, how much have you seen?

Oh, perfect. Trump has put Musk and his staffers in charge of investigating how Jeffrey Goldberg ended up in the Signal chat. I’m sure we can all expect a thorough, unbiased report any day now (Sarcasm).

I have had the "pleasure" of working with 3 enterprise architects for the past 10 months. In this time, I have learned exactly what not to do. Guess what it is? DO NOT be a hinderance to the business... Be a center of acceleration.

They did not get the memo...

@tracketpacer.bsky.social and I are gonna try doing these every month or so. Co-streaming with a merged chat, so you can watch either channel!

This Saturday we'll fix the OSI model, maybe, and also take questions from viewers!

Yeah, I got a question. Why haven't I been invited?

But also, how do we fix users?

I had a buddy at work be like "one of us can operate off of 2 hours of sleep, taking care of a baby and the other is struggling with caffeine and 9 hours of sleep"

I believe in you buddy! Even though I only had 4 hours last night... I'm so tired grandpa

14.01.2025 05:55 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Cost. I've never met a more budget conscious group lol

Cloud is never cheaper for their needs

13.01.2025 02:11 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Definitely! It just also comes down to cost and use case. Engineering firms can't use cloud storage, it breaks every known CAD software for example. But your average office worker doesn't need that and SharePoint/OneDrive (or similar) is perfect. Or shove containers into k8s or cloud and be done lol

13.01.2025 00:37 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

No, that they do not. Typically would be Hyper-V or VMware "traditional hosting". Either way still interesting! I like your perspective

13.01.2025 00:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

How does your model account for on-prem hybrid infrastructure? Or is it cloud only?

12.01.2025 23:34 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I can understand that viewpoint but I view it this way: Infrastructure should be making build pipelines for the app teams. That way they are created by folks who live and breath infrastructure. Taking a security first approach

12.01.2025 23:15 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And now we are at the point of why I was hired at this org about a week ago lol

Yes! From the rooftops, yes! And now we can let the app teams do what they do best and we provide infrastructure that "just works". I do not believe a developer can do ops, nor the opposite. It takes working together

12.01.2025 22:48 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Ohhh definitely! However, in my current org, it has come down to my team to build out everything. (More traditional SysAdmin team, I guess) And building out with Terraform while these teams still have their access, would be a pain. Sadly, it is the only technology pushed to those entering the field

12.01.2025 22:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Right! And in most orgs, the app teams still fail to do basic security measures for infrastructure. Mostly due to it not really being their job before now. However, Ops teams still take it upon themselves to use Terraform and fail for everyone

12.01.2025 21:55 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I wish but no. If other teams have the pleasure of creating their own resources via click ops or otherwise (not Terraform or similar) then declarative languages fall apart. I can scan the environment as part of my "audit"

12.01.2025 21:17 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Over the next few months, I'll be sharing more on this for those who are interested. Terraform is the big name but it really isn't flexible and I still have yet to find a good reason to use it over other products. Stating infrastructure only works when the whole business buys in
