THREAD: One thing that is fascinating about music using the SID chip on the Commodore 64 is that often musicians would look at different ways of getting sounds out of it.
One would be to call their music players multiple times a frame, meaning different sounds possible.

@spiteri316.bsky.social Listened to the latest Metroid podcast. Sadly the questions asked by the journalist for the article are about standard for a Japanese media outlet. I work at a major newspaper in Japan and it’s about standard. Man I could send you some naff examples.

Actually would love to make that a question for you guys on the podcast. As veterans, do you think 4 works as a good introduction to the series when considering what makes up a good Metroid game? As a relative newcomer to the series, it did make me want to dip my toe in more instalments.

Might be naive but I still think Prime 4 acts as an excellent introduction to a Metroidvania as it introduces elements like backtracking and Samus’ arsenal. The problem is that it left veterans wanting, so they missed giving it the right balance.

For purely selfish reasons, I’m glad they did as the Switch 2 here in Japan is still only available through a lottery system. One is one it’s way this month (present for the kids, honest… 😀). The dual release allowed me to play the game on release, which was nice. Only downside is the load times.

I’m late but I also discovered your Prime music YouTube videos. Great stuff. I follow the Commodore 64’s SID chip scene a lot (very advanced for its time) so I loved your deep dives.

The Metroid series continues to impress me. Thoroughly absorbed in Prime 4. Loading times on the Switch 1 are a little slow but sometimes the break is worth it.

I’m very new to the Metroid universe (only finished Metroid Prime Remastered the day before 4 was released) so I’m not quite as invested as some of the veterans.

But it’s the lore and stories that attracted me in to the series. Also as a Doctor Who fan I’ve see a fair share of dodgy conclusions. 😀

Bugger. It’s going to be a while before I get to that point so will have to make the most of the journey there.
