Surely nothing bad has ever happened when a critical mass of the population feel that their future has been ripped out from under them and that the only thing they have to look forward to is the steady erosion of their standard of living. Surely that always turns out fine.

Yes, this. When you segregate people and separate them so that in person spaces are not accessible or even feasible online becomes a lifeline.

Anyway: what are YOU going to do to make in-person connections safe for disabled people, queer but especially trans people, for kids who can't drive? If the answer is "nothing" don't blame them for not logging off.

People think "how many disabled people are there really, elana? stop making excuses!" 1. most old people. 2. More people are disabled all the time. And # of queer people keeps growing society fails to compel us to commit suicide or be closeted. SO yeah, this is a lot of people I speak of.

One of my best friends had a prosthetic leg. Finding physical spaces that met both of our access needs (I need to not get covid. He couldn't climb more than a couple of stairs) was a fucking nightnare. (I put this in past tense as he died). Most subway stops are not accesable either.

If someone is going to get queer bashed if they show up as their full selves in public. If someone is going to get COVID (and become futher disabled) if they show up in public. I mean-- what is it that you expect THEM to do? Maybe YOU are the one who needs to do something to make things accessible.

really tired of conversations about how we need to get people to spend more time offline that don't acknowledge that one of the reasons people ARE online is their access needs aren't being met in physical spaces. This is especially true for queer people and disabled people.

Can’t emphasise this enough. I once did a media interview where the interviewee said he was “tired” of hearing about the benefits of online communities and this post helps show why his exhaustion doesn’t matter.
