Sorry but for me it will always be 1995!
02.08.2025 19:34 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is fascinating, I hope I can come and see the exhibition! One of the heiresses in my new book who married the son of a Scottish Earl, was of similar ancestry to Miss Lambe, from Jamaicaβ¦
02.08.2025 12:04 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thrilled that the story of Lela Harrisβs stunning portrait of Miss Lambe from #Sanditon has made it to the BBC news. You can read more about her incredible work and how my research on the Ladyβs Magazine, fashion plates and Austen intersect with it here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

02.08.2025 08:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Today, 1 August is Emancipation Day, the day when in 1834 enslavement was βabolishedβ across the British Empireβ¦ it took a further 4 years in 1838 for βfull freedomβ.
Itβs also a reminder that whilst the former slave owners were given βcompensationβ by the British government
So cool! πππ
01.08.2025 12:07 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Grateful to Gideon Rachman for these words about #Empireworld in the FT's guide to summer reading, over the weekend. I'll be speaking about it at the @southbankcentre on Sunday July 14th, as part of its You Belong Here festival. Tickets available. www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/lit...
24.06.2024 06:46 β π 14 π 6 π¬ 0 π 1How can I help?
01.08.2025 12:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is VERY EXCITING! πππ
01.08.2025 11:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Since @onslies.bsky.social went to the trouble to compile this thorough list of #earlymodern published primary sources, it should be more widely known: liesbethcorens.wordpress.com/2019/12/13/e...
And @sharonhoward.bsky.social has this page for online resources: earlymodernweb.org/resources/
Thank you. I really enjoyed a talk you gave at the University of Chester a few years ago!
31.07.2025 20:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yay! Congrats. My new book, #Heiresses, hot on your heels, also features women, wealth & power though Iβve confined myself to only a couple of centuries. π www.mirandakaufmann.com/blog/my-new-...
31.07.2025 17:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Tomorrow Edinburgh Festival Fringe begins, a month long celebration of the arts.
Rachael Scally's article reveals the legacies of slavery in one of the festival's key venues, the Royal Infirmary (now the Edinburgh Futures Institute).

This was a powerful and memorable event. Watch now!

30.07.2025 17:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Kidsβ Summer holiday reading sorted. β
30.07.2025 17:30 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0Ooh thank you! Any callous women in your own research?
30.07.2025 17:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Absolutely delighted with review of #Heiresses in @publisherswkly.bsky.social:
βfemale enslavers were just as callous as their male counterpartsββ¦βshe frequently leaves her subjects in their mansions to dive into the history ofβ¦enslaved peopleβ www.publishersweekly.com/9781639368297
Ooh looking forward to this! Any women featured?
30.07.2025 16:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Great to see coverage of work by some of Manchester's most engaged students in the Guardian today: www.theguardian.com/news/2025/ju...
For the full essays by Destinie Reynolds, Beth Carson, Moleka Newman, Aimee Eggington and Aashe Singh: www.royalexchange.co.uk/visit-eat-dr...
Highly recommend- Iβm looking forward to doing some joint events with @malikalnasir.bsky.social in the autumnβ¦
30.07.2025 16:17 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Like your style! Would have liked a Waterstones template with all the new books (or at least those of my fellow #skystorians) so I could post that!
30.07.2025 16:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It would be fascinating to be able to trace in more detail how and when African people go from being beneficiaries of wills to being bequeathed (and of course later, references to manumission).
30.07.2025 14:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0You seem to have misunderstood me. Iβm referring to wills where Africans were left money and goods NOT treated as property themselves. See #BlackTudors pp.256-258

I also have refs to some interesting 16th/early 17th wills leaving legacies to African people - @sophiemerrix.bsky.social may have some too.
30.07.2025 08:53 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Youβre welcome. Does your project include probate inventories too? Also hope you can include the will of Henry Jetto, first known one made by a Black person in England: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_J...
