Blight Club forever โค๏ธ Much love to the whole team. Despite the fanguardian fuckery it mostly ended on a high note - the stuff from y'all (Voicemail Dump Truck, Blight Club, and GB Kidz especially) from the past few months was some of the best stuff made under the GB name

The top 1% evade $163 billion in taxes per year โ€” enough to end homelessness, hunger, and pay for universal childcare.

๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿป This is the crime wave we should be talking more about.

On the other hand,

Strong social programs (single payer healthcare, education, housing) increases velocity
Progressive taxes increase velocity
Regulated financial markets increase velocity
Increased worker rights/unions increase velocity

These things must be addressed or things will get worse

The central consideration of the economy should be the velocity of money - if money is actively being spent and changing hands in an economy, it fosters employment and innovation.

Tariffs decrease velocity
Income inequality decreases velocity
The private healthcare industry decreases velocity

this week on the pod we reach new heights of obscurity, digging into a couple of BBC made-for-tv horror specials from 1972

I love that it has just enough grounding to center it, opposed to a vibes piece like Aggro Dr1ft. With that said in some ways it's more abrasive and inaccessible than Dr1ft. Also the Burial soundtrack rules

A โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… review of Baby Invasion (2024) IShowSpeed presents: Funny Games Watched the Impure cut. I can't stop thinking about this one. What are the consequences of not just glorifying interactive violence but infantalizing violence? Hitting...

Baby Invasion is one of the ugliest, most confrontational films I've seen in years. Rancid vibes, I loved it boxd.it/9c4MCF

Can't stop thinking about Baby Invasion. It's a brilliant sort of fun-house mirror to our terminally online culture of detachment and the violence that surrounds us. Genuinely terrifying in its nihilism

Chung's final film Web of Deception is his most underrated, a female driven Hitchcockian cat and mouse thriller. Very twisty, with some incredible giallo lighting, great performances, and stylistic influences from De Palma and Kubrick. Seriously, seek this one out!

His fourth film I Love Maria (aka Roboforce) is a blast. A neon drenched HK sci-fi riff on RoboCop full of mechs and silly weapons. This is the midnight movie of his filmography. Tsui Hark stars (and claims to have ghost directed this one)

After the big success of Royal Warriors, Chung got a bigger budget to make another film with Michelle Yeoh. The result was Magnificent Warriors, a Hong Kong riff on Indiana Jones. While it's not quite as kinetic as Royal Warriors it's just as full of incredible stunt work and a great sense of humor

Chung's second film Royal Warriors (aka Yes Madam 2 / In the Line of Duty 2) is maybe his most seminal work. Michelle Yeoh leads this incredible action spectacle with killdozers, chainsaw fights, and more.

In his debut, It's a Drink! It's a Bomb! a bomb smuggled in a soda can is lost, leading to a chase between criminals and a group of witnesses. This is a light buddy comedy through and through but with some great car action choreography, an adorable Maggie Cheung, and a JoJo coded villian

Ranked: David Chung A list of 5 films compiled on Letterboxd, including Royal Warriors (1986), Web of Deception (1989), I Love Maria (1988), Magnificent Warriors (1987) and It's a Drink! It's a Bomb! (1985).

Watched through David Chung's filmography as a director, usually known for his work as a cinematographer for Tsui Hark, Chung's directoral output, though small, is incredibly strong and wide spanning in style boxd.it/EUpfI

Crazy how dogshit A24's slate looks this year. The quippy Death of a Unicorn? The cheeky cult of celebrity flick Opus? Alex Garland's Iraq War propaganda Warfare? All dead on arrival

Loved the Rule of Jenny Pen. Oldsploitation at its finest. Great performances from John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush paired with some disorienting cinematography. Really digs into the dread of elderly care homes and the battles against one's own body and agency.

The most frustrating part is that it's still edited like a standard Severance episode! They lack the formal rigor to actually slow it down and get contemplative

Honestly I'm souring on season 2 of Severance in the exact same way I soured on season 2 of The Bear. A lot of fart-sniffing after a breakout success. Attempts at experimentation on the formula without the formal rigor to actually mix it up
