The thing is, as someone who wants a vibrant field of newly published fiction and also, to a definite degree, financially depends on it: What's wrong with that? Books are meant to last. Yeah you want kids to see themselves as they are now reflected in stories, but it's also a way of connecting back.

Fermi's Wake - Season Pass by Chris Farnell - Scarlet Ferret When only one series of an accidentally planet-destroying starship and her rag-tag crew just isn't enough. The Fermi returns!

Not technically announced yet (and date TBC) but the paperback release of Fermi's Wake is definitely bound to fall within the earlier half of that window: scarletferret.com/books/fermis...

Donald Trump is in power and rights are being stripped from minorities and marginalised people everywhere you look, and you, personally, are having a really great time.

He's your President, buddy.

You came in here to say "I told you so" to gay people losing marriage rights because you imagine they also had feelings about US support of Israel's genocide in Gaza.
You're not a bigger picture guy.

Close, intelligent, in some cases near lifelong friends are starting to talk casually about the use of ChatGPT in their lives or in some cases are clearly getting paid/perks to promote its use and itโ€™s like watching your social circle slowly, and with a big smile on their face, all join Scientology.

I don't know about "hero" but it is certainly a bold move using "crybaby" as an insult as someone who seems to approve of the mass murder of actual babies.
I'm glad you said it. It's an eloquent demonstration of the person you are and informs anyone reading just how seriously they should take you.

Who do you think you're talking to here? Why, when people are having their rights stripped away, do you think this is a remotely appropriate response? What story are you telling yourself where you post shit like this and believe yourself to be the hero?

It ends up being a really quite brutal and harrowing portrayal of institutional child abuse.

What I love about this government is how when you point out examples of the law being applied in a way that creates stark and obvious acts of injustice they say "Well, we all have to obey the law" as if the law is some sort of naturally occurring phenomenon rather than literally their job to decide.

When I pitched 2000AD a story where Judge Dredd stepped into the Quantum Leap machine and was transported back in time into the body of an early 21st century supply teacher, they said "That's a shit idea" and "Literally nobody wants to see this" and "Get out of my office."

But who's laughing now?

I would say it's fine to judge cis people for not withdrawing from the Polari prize. No problem with any trans person that doesn't want to concede the space.

Whatever you might think about the controversy, I personally am looking forward to the unveiling of the Polari Prize's Extremely Shortlist.

It annoys me that eventually I am going to verify my age on here just because I'm annoyed by the little blue "DM received" notification, even though I'm 99% certain it's going to turn out to be a spam bot.

How did they find a venue exactly like the bridge of the NCC 1701-D?

They're going to make this bow so hard to string for the most completely boring reasons like there's a little secret latch or something

His crew are going to eat a load of food and then just... feel quite bloated? Like, they're really going to regret hitting the carbs as much as they did?

While I don't approve, it's got to be said that at least his using women primarily as prizes or obstacles is certainly in-keeping with the original text.

O'Brother Where Art Thou gets a pass for the soundtrack and the Good George Clooney.

We are in very real danger of Polyphemus being a guy who's like 6 foot 5 and wears an eye patch.

I understand *why* Nolan wants to make a film of this nested and non-linear narrative, I just don't trust The Odyssey to someone who thinks Catwoman's main deal is "being a cat burglar" rather than, as her name clearly states, being super into cats and cat-related paraphernalia.

since we don't have kickstarter to kind of provide some kind of exciting goal/target/sense of urgency I'm thinking maybe we do something really depressing like this instead

What we need is a short list of the definitive discourses that everyone needs to have read through before they're allowed to post.

While the Sci-Fi Discourse is hot I should direct you to my own science fiction (the new kind). A planet-killing FTL drive, gas giant bees, Frankenstein-based economies, aphantasia brain parasites, philosophical zombie apocalypses... maybe *this* is the science fiction canon?

Depends which ideas you want to analyse. Even by the 50s, those three writers represent a very thin, very localised and specific slice of a genre that was already well over a century old.

I have declared my intention to slam this car door as hard as I can. That my dick currently obstructs that door shall not impede our commitment to carrying out previously stated policy.
