Great podcast, Greg! Thought I’d take a few minutes for a casual listen and ended up taking copious notes. I will definitely order a copy right away. It was surprising to hear the interviews’ queries about the origins of slavery and their attempt to confront the brutality of the system.

Many thanks! Yeah, I had no idea what to expect going into the conversation, but they asked great questions on the broad context for slavery in early America.

An ICE agent shot and killed Ruben Ray Martinez, a US citizen and San Antonio resident, in March 2025. Then ICE and the Texas Department of Public Safety covered it up. He was 23 years old. I am calling for a full investigation into this shooting, including why there was an 8-month cover up.

The average household lost more than $1,000 to Trump's tariffs.

Now the Court has spoken: this was unlawful all along.

The President owes you an apology - and a refund.

Wow @hampton-smith.bsky.social blowing people’s minds with analysis of engravings of Trumbull’s painting of Bunker Hill and the gradual erasure of Black soldiers over decades of reproduction.

Add to that Laura Nelson, with a great talk on the challenges for free Black Pennsylvanians to create a legal paper trail documenting that freedom.

Day two of Black Declarations of Independence at the Library Company with separate presentations by excellent grad students, Simone Gulliver and Kasha Appleton, on Black mothers battling the limits of emancipation in different contexts. Keep an eye out for their research!

Instead of a plenary talk by one of them, we’re somehow getting a plenary panel of Christopher L. Brown, Catherine Clinton, Annette Gordon-Reed, and Nell Irvin Painter. 😳

Great start to the Black Declarations of Independence conference. Terrific papers by Grant Stanton and William Morgan about Black petitions in Massachusetts in 1774 and 1777, respectively, demanding abolition of slavery, natural rights to freedom, and inclusion in the Declaration’s claim to rights.

Also learned a lot from VanJessica Gladney’s reframing of Shays’ Rebellion as a regulator movement, focused on the participation of a Black man named Moses Sash. Great stuff.

After leaving WHO, Trump officials propose more expensive replacement to duplicate it HHS proposes spending $2 billion a year to re-create systems the U.S. accessed through the WHO at a fraction of the cost, according to officials briefed on the matter.

$38.3 BILLION with a B! Think of what we could do besides build concentration camps. What an evil waste!

The $38.3 billion they are going to spend for interment camps could fund the annual budget of NASA, the EPA, and all clean energy R&D at the Department of Energy—combined.
