I once ate ice cream in Moscow during the winter that I stood in line for outside, no less (on or near Red Square, iirc). Never again (not just b/c in Moscow), but had to be tried once. Enjoy!

Thank you @olgaz.bsky.social for this birthday gift, which I've just finished (and yes, your gift is going to be shamefully late, but you already knew that).
The (not so) idyllic pre-revolution days and turbulent post-revolution times of a young woman in Baku. Very recommended.
It's been a long time coming...part two of Andrei Platonov's Chevengur, covering chapters 25-43, is out today!
As we finally arrive in the town of Chevengur, nearly 250 pages in, we go from picaresque romp to the dirty work of actually building the Soviet state.
No longer tomorrow, but today -- in New Orleans:

Ha! I didn't know about that book in particular (thank you; I feel in good company now), but it's really true about we can read the same book really differently at different ages.
17.02.2026 01:22 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I hated it when we read it in 9th grade; I was putting my hand to my forehead and intoning the protagonists' names to underscore how melodramatic I found it. Had to read it again for a class senior year of college, where it turned out to be my favorite book from that course.

From yesterday: 1) One of my favorite buildings in Santa Monica.
2) Columbia U, where I've neither applied nor worked, sent me a letter, to my parents' address, informing its employees that there had been a data breach. Maybe, again, because someone else has my same first and last name.
Definitely the most literary support of Ukraine I've ever seen (the outside had the trident; random (?) food place, Santa Monica, CA).
