This morning I started rereading The Talisman, my favorite book from my childhood about the adventures of 13-year-old Jack Sawyer, which I originally read when I was 13 years old, to my 13-year-old daughter. Sometimes the eternal return can be a good thing.

The fact that we're not honoring Assata Shakur in her death with the same passion conservatives have been honoring Charlie Kirk pretty much sums up what's wrong with the Democratic party.
30.09.2025 14:42 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Like Kirk, Jordan was killed publicly, but unlike Kirk, Jordanβs death was slow, as Penny choked him out while people on the train screamed for him to stop. And now Penny is working in Silicon Valley. All because of the violent and well-funded American right. Be angry about that, morherfuckers.
13.09.2025 10:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Neely, a homeless Black man, was killed on video in the subway while having a mental health emergency, and his killer Daniel Penny, a white ex-MarΓne, was eventually acquitted despite video evidence and even made some sort of fucking hero because of the immense funding of the American right wing.
13.09.2025 10:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As I hear right wingers express a desire for vengeance in Charlie Kirkβs death, I think of Jordan Neely.
13.09.2025 10:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0With every conversation I have and every new information I get this week, I keep coming back to Lee Thomasβs words from the day after the Charlie Kirk killing. Leave it to a master fiction writer to put it best.
13.09.2025 09:38 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0So the suspect in the Charlie Kirk killing is <drum roll> a lone wolf white dude from a religious family. White conservatives losing their minds trying to blame POC, trans people, and immigrants, and of course it's someone who most resembles...Charlie Kirk.

When we say "law and order" we mean state power. Republicans fetishize the police and military, Democrats lionize the courts, but they're all part of the same racist class warfare against people who don't have enough money to fight them. And people who have enough money to fight them, ARE them.
09.09.2025 12:48 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I fully admit that Iβve lost faith in every single institution in this country. But I havenβt lost faith in my friends and allies. We may be isolated from our institutions, but we donβt have to be isolated from each other. In fact, our only chance of salvation is in embracing each and every Other.
28.08.2025 16:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If we are to fight this regime, we must fight their (and our) othering at every turn - point it out relentlessly when you see and hear it, document it when our police and military enforce it, gently tell our friends and allies when they unconsciously give voice to it.
28.08.2025 16:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Maybe the most insidious form of othering is at the core of Trumpism: criminalization of Others. And while there are a plethora of possible Others in this world, the primary targets in the current iteration of the U.S. are undocumented immigrants, the non-wealthy, people of color, and trans people.
28.08.2025 16:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Probably a majority of Americans, in the span of roughly one generation, have gone from mass rejection to a majority embracing gay rights, but many of those same people speak of the trans community like they are all athletes looking for a competitive advantage.
28.08.2025 16:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Many of us have been living this way for much longer than the past 9 months. While we have made progress combating overt racism and homophobia, many of us who would never say the n-word out loud are completely comfortable avoiding and even attacking racial equity if we can just call it βwokenessβ.
28.08.2025 16:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Othering is, at its core, the act of giving up on that empathy for people weβve othered. Once weβve given up that empathy, for many of us without even giving it much thought, we are vulnerable to fascist policing like weβre experiencing.
28.08.2025 16:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Something I think about almost constantly right now is how weaponized the act of othering has become, and how quickly itβs become entrenched in our policing. In fact, itβs probably the most important and obvious way we as a country have descended into fascism.

This has been my approach too! Sheβs up for anything, so lately weβve gone for stuff Iβd held off on because it was long - Les Mis, Count of Monte Cristo, now Crime and Punishment. I love doing voices too, which might be enhancing my appreciation of Razumikhin. Heβs just so fun to read aloud.
