What did the Romans do for us? They forgot to take Alexanders with them when they left in 410AD. Early flowers from where it is invading a #Cambridge hedge. #WildFlowerHour

Interesting. There’s a patch near home in Cambridge with no signs yet but the extent of the plant in Bury is so wide there’s always a chance of a few early flowers.

Photos of what Prof Henslow and Babington would have called it Hyacinthus/Muscari racemosus between Cherry Hinton and the Gog-magog Hills.

Under Blackthorn & Alexanders (hence illumination with phone torch) here's Grape-hyacinth, Muscari neglectum, in the spot described by Prof Henslow in 1828 as 'under a hedge on the side of the hill between Hinton & the Gogs' (see ALT).

Another, lower, rectangular table stands along the side wall with smaller pot plants on top. Between the three small tables stand two large, sculptures on white plinths.

In March there will be three Sunday afternoon quarter peal attempts by the Norman Tower Bellringers, on 8 and 15 March and for the Justices Service on 22 March.

There will also be a full peal attempt by a local band and friends on Saturday 14 March starting at around 10.00 am.

A close up photo of a stone plaque inscribed thus:

       NEAR THIS SPOT
ON THE 20TH NOVEMBER A.D. 1214.

CARDINAL LANGTON & THE BARONS
  SWORE AT ST EDMUND'S ALTAR
 THAT THEY WOULD OBTAIN FROM

   THE RATIFICATION OF
       MAGNA CHARTA.

WHERE THE RUDE BUTTRESS TOTTERS TO ITS FALL,

WHERE E'EN THE SKILFUL EYE CAN SCARCELY TRACE
THE ONCE HIGH ALTAR'S LOWLY RESTING PLACE-
LET PATRIOTIC FANCY MUSE AWHILE

SIX WEARY CENTURIES HAVE PAST AWAY:
PALACE AND ABBEY MOULDER IN DECAY-
COLD DEATH ENSHROUDS THE LEARNED & THE BRAVE

BUT STILL WE READ IN DEATHLESS RECORDS HOW
THE HIGH-SOUL'D PRIEST CONFIRMD THE BARONS VOW;
AND FREEDOM, UNFORGETFUL STILL RECITES,
THIS SECOND BIRTH PLACE OF OUR NATIVE RIGHTS.

Inspired by this plaque on the ruins of the Abbey #BuryStEdmunds I am reading 'Magna Carta' by Dan Jones and wondering how much of the legend is true.

Secret letters on Suffolk councils consultation 'disappointing' County council letters show it did not want a public consultation on a three-council option for LGR.

Transparency matters when it comes to local government reorganisation.

Residents deserve an open and honest conversation about what structure will best serve communities across Suffolk.
