A thistle leaf border is defined by pearl purl, and cutwork purls laid down over soft string padding in an S shape. Rough purls make up the middle S section. Alternating bright check purls with smooth purls comprise the left end while a pattern of bright check with rough purls is being laid down over the right end.

A thistle leaf in progress. I may redo the left end of the cutwork as the right end seems to be melding better. It’s always a struggle to stick to the brief (2cm of rough purls) when trying to be creative! Also, how annoying to have a nicely flat section of rough purl bunch up as more go in 😫🧶🪡
