Watching protests from my phone in Gorom Camp, South Sudan, gives me hope. As a trans woman forced to flee my home, I’m isolated and unsafe. But your voices in Indiana remind me I am not alone. Please don’t forget those of us still waiting for freedom.

While everyone’s counting likes, I’m counting how many days I’ve gone without safety, food, or sleep. I’m a trans refugee and no one’s engaging with that reality.

Some of us aren’t canceling plans we’re just trying to survive the thunder in a shelter or on the street. As a trans refugee, I don’t get to protect anyone from storms. Not even myself.

I’m glad people are thinking about their cats this 4th, but I’m a trans refugee just trying to survive the noise, fear, and instability. No one’s giving tips for people like me.

While Congress signs off on $3.4 trillion, I’m a trans refugee scraping by for food and safe shelter in a country that sees me as a political issue, not a human being. Who’s this “big, beautiful bill” actually for?
