The words that came to lifa felt childish. They stuck in her tightening throat. He laughed at me. He said things to me. He touched me. As she so often did, and in a way that was so often out of her control, Tifa thought of her family. Marlene on a barstool, and fifa behind the bar. Between them on its surface, much as the two reports now sat between Tifa and Mick, a sheet a paper sent home from school. Behind Marlene's little shoulder, Tifa could see Cloud and Denzel sitting at a booth. Both had pained looks on their faces. Denzel, because he was fighting a ha ha, Marlene is in trouble, smug smile. Cloud, because he was trying too hard to give the impression that he did not find the situation to be funny. Tifa had especially avoided making eye contact with Cloud. Marlene's face was scrunched in righteous indignation. But, she said, but he said- Tifa held up a hand. Marlene fell silent. I know, Tifa said. And that was wrong. But so was hitting him. On the bar, Marlene's small hands closed into fists. Thumbs on top, not tucked under her fingers. Fifa taught her that. Less likely you would break them, when throwing a punch. Marlene's eyes narrowed to slits. He deserved it, she declared. Tifa closed her eyes, ignoring the choked sounds from the booth, of Cloud muffling his laughter. Tifa looked at her attorney. He fucking deserved it, she wanted to say to him. He deserved worse.

The bass vibrated through the crowd like a shared heartbeat. Everyone was dancing, Mina raw-boned and wild, tossing her hair back and laughing, all her teeth on display. Colette with her hands in the air, her eyes closed. She had gone entirely into the music. Mina pressed something into his hand. A familiar shape, smooth plastic casing warm from Mina’s skin. He didn’t even think about it, just put it against his arm and felt the quick prick. Let the empty vial drop to the floor. The lights flashed, bathing everyone in purple, blue, red. The day receded, washed away by the ocean of neon and fog and music. Everything here was simple. Easy. The blood on his hands, the smell of burned flesh, blackmail photographs, regrets and bitterness, all of it—melted away. Nothing mattered here. Maybe nothing mattered anywhere.

ik commenting is hard, but u don't have to write a dissertation- even “this was amazing” or “i loved this” makes writers happy. it feels like some people treat fic writers like untouchable writing machines and don’t realize they’re fellow fans, who likely would love chatting abt their work with u

listen i love ao3 as much as the next guy but ive seen people quit fic writing over the past few years because people comment and engage with authors way less, and then everyone still freaks out when ao3 goes down- if a fic is irreplaceable to u, let the author know!

I believe so! I’ve heard some readers say they prefer longer chapters and stories. but ya when I see a one shot or a chapter thats 8000-10000, it feels like a lottt
