Air bubbles trapped in glacier ice recently calved off Brewster Glacier in Aotearoa / New Zealand.

We don’t know the age of this ice but I estimate a few centuries - suggesting the bubbles would record pre-industrial CO2 levels.

We (@andrewmackintosh.bsky.social, Rachael Lappan and I) were lucky to spend part of this week at Brewster Glacier, New Zealand.

This trip was spent sampling recently exposed bedrock from surrounding & within a few hundred metres of the modern glacier.
