When every part of your life was supervised—
when people walked into your room without knocking,
read your files without asking,
called meetings about you without inviting you—
you don’t always learn what a boundary feels like.

We’ve been taught to show up after the crisis:
Drop off the casserole. Share the GoFundMe. Post the tribute.
But mutual care—real, rooted, relational care—starts before the fall.

We had a long conversation between some former youth and our former workers, about how much HARDER it was to get up and get out of bed and deal with school AND manage our trauma. They agreed that trauma informed care was not really the best practices at the time.

For youth from care, “adulting” often means survival without backup.
No emergency contact.
No soft place to land.
No one to call when it all falls apart.

We’re told we’re “resilient.”
We’re expected to thrive.
But resilience without resources is just a nicer word for neglect.
