Is there someone at the White House who takes a look at the Oval Office and then, like Christopher Walken on SNL, determines it "Needs more gold?"

For the Star, @lindasvendsen.bsky.social and I share pieces one year after Andrea Skinner's editorial that detailed her childhood sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather, and revealed that her mother, Alice Munro, stayed with him. Ed. by @debdundas.bsky.social.

Deborah Dundas: I grew up proud of my name. Hereโ€™s why I donโ€™t mind Dundas Station being renamed Change is part of cities. So too is learning their history, both good and bad.

My piece on Dundas has caused something of a kerfuffle. I am proud of my name and still don't mind Dundas station being renamed TMU. History is nuanced.

It's unfortunate. It's a constant deluge and is very dehumanizing. It's akin to being called simply taxpayers instead of citizens or residents with no civic duties.

Is it me or does anyone else feel that marketers now rule the world? I feel as if we have become customers. Not citizens, not people - every new technology (AI, robot delivery - with ads, commercial flights to space) is aimed at selling us something? What happened to innovation for the human good?
