Are serious games an unexpected lightning rod for food systems change?
Our event last week galvanised folks from food systems, game design, artistic expression, & activism spaces to think about how games could be used in their work.

The latest Feed Podcast epsiode discusses how "agroecology" & "sustainable intensification" start from different values, ask different questions, and often talk past each other.

In-person participants reflected on the desire for more creative & interactive in-person spaces to explore & connect w/others. In the online breakout sessions where we played online games & discussed how they reflected real-life decisionmaking, participants also expressed a want for these spaces.

Somehow, our small interactive event had struck a nerve: the registrations were from a broad group of people interested in food systems, interactive events, and environmental issues. Serious games seemed to bring in people who didnβt usually attend our panels and webinars.

Even with half-term, we hoped to see a decent turnout in-person at @oxmartinschool.bsky.social & we invited many academics & others to the event directly. But as registrations came in, both online & in-person, not only was the event very popular, we also realised this wasnβt our usual crowd.

Not wanting to miss the opportunity to record Federicoβs introduction to serious games and with accessibility in mind (not everyone can be in Oxford on a Tuesday afternoon), we also set up an online registration, ten days before the event.

In partnership w/ @federicoandreotti.bsky.social / @w-u-r.bsky.social, TABLE has been working on an online serious games library. As a presentation was slated to happen at WUR, we thought, βwhy donβt we set up a simultaneous in-person event to watch the presentation and then play games in Oxford?β
