How do we get at honest & nature-inclusive policy measure for livestock farming in the Netherlands?

Nitrogen has been at the centre of ongoing tensions in Dutch agricultural policy. Mirjam Schoonhoven-Speijer explores the history of the tensions & some proposed solutions.

Are serious games an unexpected lightning rod for food systems change?

Our event last week galvanised folks from food systems, game design, artistic expression, & activism spaces to think about how games could be used in their work.

What does β€œsustainable agriculture” actually mean, & why do scientists disagree about it?

The latest Feed Podcast epsiode discusses how "agroecology" & "sustainable intensification" start from different values, ask different questions, and often talk past each other.

Have you played serious games? Why do you think they resonate with so many people working on food systems? Tell us about your experience in the comments below or, if you were at our event on Tuesday, let others know how you found the event!

The experience of planning this event and meeting so many new faces has us at TABLE thinking more deeply about connection and climbing outside of our bubble, as it were.

In-person participants reflected on the desire for more creative & interactive in-person spaces to explore & connect w/others. In the online breakout sessions where we played online games & discussed how they reflected real-life decisionmaking, participants also expressed a want for these spaces.

Somehow, our small interactive event had struck a nerve: the registrations were from a broad group of people interested in food systems, interactive events, and environmental issues. Serious games seemed to bring in people who didn’t usually attend our panels and webinars.

Even with half-term, we hoped to see a decent turnout in-person at @oxmartinschool.bsky.social & we invited many academics & others to the event directly. But as registrations came in, both online & in-person, not only was the event very popular, we also realised this wasn’t our usual crowd.

Not wanting to miss the opportunity to record Federico’s introduction to serious games and with accessibility in mind (not everyone can be in Oxford on a Tuesday afternoon), we also set up an online registration, ten days before the event.

We expected this would be an excellent opportunity to connect with our food systems colleagues at the University of Oxford and introduce serious games to those who were unfamiliar. But that’s not exactly what happened.

In partnership w/ @federicoandreotti.bsky.social / @w-u-r.bsky.social, TABLE has been working on an online serious games library. As a presentation was slated to happen at WUR, we thought, β€œwhy don’t we set up a simultaneous in-person event to watch the presentation and then play games in Oxford?”
