I’m not entirely sure, so I’m posting this to see what others think, but I believe there’s a strong possibility, given how well-known CURE is.

I’ve always been bothered by the cult setting in MAMIYA’s ending, it felt surprising and incomprehensible to me. But if the inspiration really is Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Mamiya, then it makes perfect sense, because that “Mamiya” is a true cult leader.

I suspect the name “MAMIYA” originates from Mamiya, a recurring motif in Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s films. The concepts of hypnosis and split personalities in CURE(1997) also bear a strong resemblance to MAMIYA’s themes. In particular, Mamiya’s classic question, “Who are you?” (あんたは誰だ？)in CURE(1997)

I find them very appealing. I admire individuals who have their own distinct logic; the world operates according to their rules within their own universe. ‘Writing’ is the vehicle for the values of both Keito and Arisugawa. In fact, they are each the true creator gods of their respective worlds.

The ending where Keito is confined is, in a way, a deprivation of his love – love transfers from Mamiya as the vessel to Keito, shifting from the spiritual to the material, objectifying his twisted attachment.

Mamiya is both his love and material for his writing. Spreading Mamiya’s story through children’s literature stems partly from his ‘love’ but also from his love for his own ‘love,’ which is why he continues to create even after his retirement.

I believe Arisugawa is a completely self-contained writer. He writes for himself, and his purpose in writing does not include gaining the love of others, although he falls in love with Mamiya. Even then, he doesn’t continue writing for her sake. He is ‘narcissistic’.

“I want to paint in red, but I can only dream in black and white.” I feel lucky to have chosen to watch it on the last day of 2024 – it feels almost like the end of the world😢
