Ancient Gems Linked to Buddha Are Returned to India Sotheby’s had canceled an auction of the Piprahwa Gems after pressure from the Indian government. India said the relics were back in their β€œrightful home.”

The Piprahwa Gems, Buddhist relics taken by an English explorer from a sacred burial ground in British-occupied India in 1898, have been repatriated and will go on display to the public, the Indian government said on Wednesday.

In light of the Columbia and Brown deals, I’m bumping these slides again about the Nazi takeover of German science, which includes discussion about how they took over academia, in a manner very similar to the Brown and Columbia deals

Don’t Be Ridiculous, β€œAlligator Alcatraz” Is Not Another Example of History Repeating Itself Oh, come on. ICE’s new detention center, Alligator Alcatraz, is nothing like a concentration camp. For one thing, historians unanimously agree that...

"Those are laminated floors in there, and I’m pretty certain Dachau’s were wooden. If they even had floors, mind you. But either way, there’s your answer: different floors entirely."

yeah this one is very bad rn. it's not funny or cute or "wow, these guys are wild" that there's a concentration camp in Florida. it's a horror. It's "the concentration camp at Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport," but all major news outlets are going with "Alligator Alcatraz" in quotes.

The Shield of Achilles She looked over his shoulder

"No blade of grass, no sign of neighborhood,
Nothing to eat and nowhere to sit down,
Yet, congregated on its blankness, stood
An unintelligible multitude,
A million eyes, a million boots in line,
Without expression, waiting for a sign."

yes I did. The repetitions are usually sung, not reproduced on the page (the refrain will appear just once at the start of the poem in texts), so the choices about where to put them here are my own, guided by musical traditions.

AAP will continue to publish its own vaccine recommendations after CDC advisers sow distrust The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices plans to form a work group to review child and adolescent immunization schedules despite them undergoing constant review in real time.

If I were in charge of a small liberal arts school, I would start thinking about aggressively marketing my institution as a "knowledge-first" college. One where students can escape the intrusion of constant AI and focus on deep learning and engagement.

I visited the Africa Museum last year. Their renovation is the best attempt I've seen so far at grappling with the complex and often unanswerable questions surrounding exhibition, provenance, and restitution of looted (and otherwise colonially stolen) art. This piece unpacks these issues nicely.
