This is genuinely an important article. The two main lessons from Hungary appear to be:
DO NOT WAIT
DO NOT UNDERREACT
Authoritarians like Orban and Trump rely on opposition being unwilling to believe that what is happening is actually happening. That’s their window.

A quarter of U.S. adults, and 1 in 6 kids, are characterized as having disability. They may need support or accommodations to work - but they have energy and ability that our society can’t do without. Here’s the first in a new @publicsource.org series, Job One: www.publicsource.org/developmenta...

U.S. Steel sale block shows Pittsburgh’s complicated steel past
The president's rejection of Nippon Steel's offer to buy U.S. Steel ignites another debate about the steel industry's role in Pittsburgh's self-image.
"The painful truth is that the communities that have retained the most steel production have deferred the beginning of any postindustrial transformation and are today among the poorest communities in the nation." @chrisbriem.bsky.social on the no-sale of US Steel www.publicsource.org/us-steel-sal...

EQT has complaints against it in West Virginia. It has been sued in Pennsylvania. Now, the natural gas giant is meeting a fracking-friendly Washington.
Pittsburgh-based fracking giant EQT approaches 2025 with a sunny political forecast. Will an ongoing EPA investigation drift away? Will a class-action lawsuit cloud the skies? @quinnglabicki.bsky.social scans the horizon www.publicsource.org/pittsburgh-n...

Global mean surface temperature anomalies for each year from 1891 to 2024. There is interannual variability and a long-term warming trend. 5-year running means and a long-term linear trend line are also shown (0.77°C per century).
🚨 The first preliminary analysis from the Japan Meteorological Agency highlights 2024 as the warmest year on record globally (since at least 1891 in this data).
Additional climate rankings will be released on 1/10/2025 for other datasets.

Innamorato still working on transparency pledges
Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato signed on to transparency measures as a candidate. Most of the ideas have yet to be put into practice.
In 2023, @chwolfson.bsky.social of @publicsource.org asked the 7 candidates for Allegheny County executive what they'd do for gov't transparency. Sara Innamorato embraced a slew of improvements — but in a year has left most of them untouched www.publicsource.org/allegheny-co...

Climate change is pushing up food prices — and worrying central banks
Shifting weather patterns are reducing crop yields and squeezing supplies, creating what could become a permanent source of inflation
“There’s a material impact from climate change on global food prices” says Frederic Neumann, chief Asia economist at HSBC. “It’s easy to shrug off individual events as being isolated, but we’ve just seen such a sequence of abnormal events & disruptions that... add up to climate change impact"
