Strictly indoor cats are an ever expanding Gaussian distribution of cat litter, centered on the litter box. Also, some hairballs in the most visible and highly trafficked warm places.

Update November 22. Weโ€™ve updated this article after realising we contributed to a perfect storm of misunderstanding around a recent change in the wording and placement of Gmailโ€™s smart features. The settings themselves arenโ€™t new, but the way Google recently rewrote and surfaced them led a lot of people (including us) to believe Gmail content might be used to train Googleโ€™s AI models, and that users were being opted in automatically. After taking a closer look at Googleโ€™s documentation and reviewing other reporting, that doesnโ€™t appear to be the case.

Gmail does scan email content to power its own โ€œsmart features,โ€ such as spam filtering, categorisation, and writing suggestions. But this is part of how Gmail normally works and isnโ€™t the same as training Googleโ€™s generative AI models. Google also maintains that these feature settings are opt-in rather than opt-out, although usersโ€™ experiences seem to vary depending on when and how the new wording appeared.

Itโ€™s easy to see where the confusion came from. Googleโ€™s updated language around โ€œsmart featuresโ€ is vague, and the term โ€œsmartโ€ often implies AIโ€”especially at a time when Gemini is being integrated into other parts of Googleโ€™s products. When the new wording started appearing for some users without much explanation, many assumed it signalled a broader shift.

Weโ€™ve revised this article to reflect what we can confirm from Googleโ€™s documentation, as itโ€™s always been our aim to give readers accurate, helpful guidance.

If you have been sharing that Malwarebytes article on the Gmail thing, you should note the giant correction up top.

I once knew a Federal bank examiner, and one time someone asked him why we had to KEEP inspecting banks over and over. He basically said every new batch of business school grads invents bank fraud from first principles.

This is an excellent analysis and matches my own thoughts. I was hoping someone with more development expertise could explain the use of ML/AI in Arc Raiders and unpack that both in terms of technical implementation and ethical impact on the broader industry.

The amount of people I know who have been laid off from games industry jobs and are deciding to leave games entirely as a result is not only extremely saddening (of course), but also genuinely scary. We have lost legitimately thousands of years of knowledge and experience in the last four years.

Remember when some of y'all got real mad at me for doing some back-of-the-napkin math about how much water "AI" likely uses, in light of the fact that they refuse to release their actual numbers?

Anyway.

Considering AI voices in games was the example used in article, hereโ€™s some nuance:

Voice actors are increasingly pressured into giving up their voice prints in perpetuity for some of these games. Some for cheap; others are finding these terms snuck into contracts.

Not an โ€œextremeโ€, but reality.

This is the second major vulnerability in ALL AI.
And the more you know about the model, the easier it is to make it spit out things it shouldn't.

Environmental impact and net-zero pathways for sustainable artificial intelligence servers in the USA - Nature Sustainability The rapid expansion of AI server installations in the United States poses sustainability challenges in terms of water usage and carbon emissions. A study now quantifies these potential impacts and out...

A new state-by-state evaluation of the projected energy and water use of "AI" data centers in the US. Looksโ€ฆ real bad. Like, "undoing tech sector climate gains" bad.

Strongly recommends immediately ensuring any & all new "AI" data centers to run on existing & expanded renewables grids. Whichโ€ฆ yeah.

It literally has a disclosure on its Steam page. It didn't "slip through", man. You tried to charge people for a thing that's got slop in it and they're mad.

I have an extension to add a pop-up on the Steam page for it but I really think it should be by default top-of-page.

Execs always claim bloated budgets increase retail prices. This is a lie.

They will always increase prices to whatever they think they can get away with. Always have, always will. AI is merely a new get-richer-quicker scheme.

And execs will never admit the most bloated costsโ€ฆ are themselves.

"what games will you play when everything uses AI?"

So there's this cool thing called playing older games, did you know we have hundreds of thousands of them?
Enough to keep someone busy for multiple lifetimes?
I'm not gonna run out anytime soon

Still hoping the AI bubble bursts though of course

Chinaโ€™s CO2 emissions have been flat or falling for past 18 months, analysis finds Worldโ€™s biggest polluter on track to hit peak emissions target early but miss goal for cutting carbon intensity

This a big deal: "Chinaโ€™s carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"

China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.
