An unremarkable area at centre is outlined with a dashed circle surrounded by a white box. Lines extend from the box to a pullout at right containing faint, grainy white light surrounded by a circle labeled β€œCandidate dark galaxy – diffuse emission.” Four white dots are circled in blue and labeled globular clusters. Hubble has joined forces with ESA's Euclid and NAOJ's Subaru Telescope in Hawaii to identify a galaxy that appears to be 99% dark matter!

An image of space made by the Euclid telescope shows a bright barred spiral galaxywith two sweeping arms glowing in shades of blue and white against a deep black background dotted with stars. Its core is luminous. Its spiral arms curve gracefully outward to the left and down to the right, resembling a cosmic garland draped across the scene. A smaller, faint and round galaxy appears to the left of the barred spiral galaxy.

πŸŽ„ Are your holiday decorations ready? Euclid has a cosmic garland to add: NGC 646.

The large barred spiral galaxy appears close to a smaller galaxy to the left, but they’re actually about 45 million light-years apart πŸ‘‰ https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2025/12/Euclid_s_galaxy_garland

Those of us who have been here the longest know how hard he worked to make Euclid a success. He became its embodiment, working tirelessly to ensure its success; we owe him an immense debt of gratitude, and we will surely have the opportunity to reflect in detail on all that we owe him.

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing of Yannick Mellier, which occurred during the night between Friday and Saturday. His death leaves a huge void within the consortium and our community.

Artist impression of the Euclid mission in space. The spacecraft is white and gold and consists of three main elements: a flat sunshield, a large cylinder where the light from space will enter, and a 'boxy' bottom containing the instruments. The spacecraft is shown half in the shadow, because the sunshield will always be faced in the direction of the Sun and thus protecting the telescope from the light of the Sun. The background is a realistic representation of a deep field view of the night sky, with many galaxies visible. On the bottom half of the image, an artistic representation of the cosmic web is overlayed over the galaxies. The cosmic web is the scaffolding of the cosmos on which galaxies are built, consisting primarily of dark matter and laced with gas. The cosmic web is here represented with a grid and a two-dimensional representation of a cosmological simulation.
