Euclid Q1 data release fields

It's #Euclid data release day!

@esa.int and the Euclid Consortium are making 63 deg² of Wide Survey data available to the world. Imaging and spectroscopy data, catalogues and masks for 20+ million galaxies, quasars, stars and substellar objects.

I presented to ESA Council the 1st data from @esa.int's Euclid mission. This dataset includes 26 million galaxies, including a catalogue of more than 380 000 galaxies and the first catalogue of 500 galaxy-galaxy strong lenses, created using AI algorithms trained by the effort of 10k volunteers.

a bright central galaxy, surrounded by rings and arcs of other galaxies that number in the thousands

This looks like it is absolutely not real.

But it is.

A tiny tiny patch of sky (FoV: 7.1' x 3.6') - so about the size of a grain of rice at arm's length, and ALL of these galaxies in it.

And then more beyond that. 🤯
