That said, I bet there’s a healthy handful of writers who could take on Dr Who. The challenge is to find something new and exciting for the Doc to do. Replacing BBC paper mache sets with Disney extravagance is no substitute for great story telling.

Your analysis of UK terrestrial tv is accurate. Despite occasional flurries, there isn’t enough investment in writers and writing. Instead a handful of writers take it in turns to be “blue-eyed boy” and mop up the available work. It’s fun when it’s you. I must admit, but it’s not a system.
