I'm still waiting for my spiritual sequel to Unreal 1. The lone human explorer vibe, multiple factions and environments, weird weapons/items and an unbroken linear adventure from area to area. And the sincere tone heh. Closest I've felt recently was the first half of black mesa xen.

FPS bullet hell test. A simple pattern requiring jumping and crouching. Quickly realised just holding crouch lets you dodge more precisely anyway so it just becomes a jumping test. Need to force the player to run round a pattern to make a precise duck important I think

I do agree, and ideally would like all story in action games to be skippable cutscenes and environmental hints. Alas that appears long out of vogue, which leaves me very resentful of how much time games now waste, especially when there are so many genres where story is the main focus like RPGs etc.

there has been plenty of criticism generally of the doom franchise including more and more story. The opening of 2016 set a precedent iD failed to follow through on which was to stay out of the way :/

Sidesidenote: "immersive" walk-and-talk, long dialogue sections etc has ruined the replay value of many games. Not saying all games needs to be Tetris but it is worth recalling how lauded doom 2016 was for its skipping of opening story...

A big deep-sea outpost rig is sagging under its own weight. It holds a giant radar and two big sonic cones, but it's old and falling apart. Two dolphins jump out of the ocean near it.
A mottled, decaying brown building-ship is built out of two sections that are joined near the top with a bridge. Below, a small longboat emerges from a fog bank on the water.
A stylized white fortress full of bridges, blocky spires, and arches is built on several giant blocks in a foggy moonlit ocean.
A way too tall ship with multiple skyscrapers on it floats on the calm ocean, with a tiny sailing boat for scale.
