Earliest Animal Cranial Surgery: from Cow to Man in the Neolithic The earliest cranial surgery (trepanation) has been attested since the Mesolithic period. The meaning of such a practice remains elusive but it is evident that, even in prehistoric times, humans from this period and from the Neolithic period had ...

This is a good analogy. Very useful in carefully controlled settings for specific usages, but unfortunately being widely inserted into everything and used without training or PPE and poisoning a lot of things and people and we’re going to pay a tonne of money to remove it safely in the future

It’s #WorldBookDay!

Admittedly, not a particularly bird-related day.

Don’t worry. We’ve fixed that by asking RSPB staff to redesign their favourite book covers… with birds. πŸ“š

*Knowing where to find* information relevant to your field of study is a central pillar of academic competency, and one of the skills a PhD imparts (although by no means confined to those with PhDs). Academics aren't just people who know stuff and have written stuff - they know where to find stuff.

Just heard of another major British Palaeolithic site falling through the planning & protection net and being green-lit for development. That's 3 confirmed in 3 years, with 2 others I'm investigating. The failure to schedule Palaeolithic sites & the erosion of planning protections are to blame. 🚨🦣🏺

Extreme Long shot but, if anyone visited the Permanent Exhibition at the National Museum of Finland between 1995-2016 and has any pictures of the interpretation panels/display/presentation of the Suontaka sword then I'd be extremely grateful for copies!

Many thanks!

A question for my #medievalsky manuscript friends: has anyone ever come across a manuscript with white spots on it, as in the image below? Or any other MS that seemed diseased? I'm particularly interested in early medieval British and Irish instances, but I'd love to hear about anything you've got!

Today I saw the Cromwell Textile Cloth - a representation of a list of textiles in Thomas Cromwell’s hand - hanging properly for the first time. In 22 years of quilting, I have made precisely two pieces I am completely happy with. This is one of them.
