Plays For Yesterday How much really survives of the big hit sixties stage shows that – at least back then – were sometimes bigger than radio and television combined?

Always odd to think how in the fifties and sixties hit stage shows were often bigger than television and radio combined, yet there's so little left of them beyond posters and the odd soundtrack album now...

Rewatched all of these recently. Some have not aged well, but some, especially monkey hands and the picnic episode, are INCREDIBLE.

What was the most thrillingly ropey now-defunct theme park you ever went to? The sort of one where the rides were sponsored by Beef Hula Hoops and opened 'by' the stars of Eldorado? Any where the best description was 'Not Alton Towers', basically...

Harry Hill's Fruit Fancies - little seen early surreal silent shorts shot on floury black and white film stock, full of escalating slapstick and odd faded celebrity fixation. Might come as a surprise to anyone who liked the Phil Mitchell jokes on TV Burp.

"I Can't Get Through" is one of the best record fair finds I've ever made (for a fiver). The stall owner laughed at me for buying it and shook his head, which is the exact point I lost all sympathy for his pricing mistake.

The New Goodies LP - Bill, Tim and Graeme captured almost live at the Cricklewood Rainbow at the height of their Woolworths ad-straddling-straddling massiveness, featuring The Funky Gibbon, Wild Thing and lots of slam down funk about Cricklewood.

"I don't like Bill Oddie, he's a grumpy little man" said one of my greatest musical collaborators. "Hang on a minute" I said. "Did you know he did all the music for The Goodies? Was a massive soul and funk fan?" I'll have to play them Cricklewood next time we're together. It'll blow their mind!

He's nothing more than just a photo in the background of a scene occasionally now. But he was a real person who, no matter how briefly, lit up the screen, and then when he didn't he died for the same audience's 'entertainment' too.

I still think quite a lot about David Scarboro, hounded to suicide by the tabloids after he was written out of the show as the character wasn't working. They reported his decline with glee simply because attacking the BBC sold papers.

03.03.2026 07:12 β€” πŸ‘ 13    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

On account of how often it was heard in the background in early EastEnders, I always associate Johnny Come Home with David Scarboro, the original Mark Fowler, which makes it weirdly more haunting than it really should be.
