People like Doyle as so desperate to pretend that past historical figures should be championed today because we championed them yesterday, hiding behind the guise of "free speech." Yet there's no awareness of the idea that we don't need to venerate bad people because they also said some good things.

His racist views, repugnant today, were unexceptional in his time. It is notable that the ire of activists never seems to be directed at Karl Marx, whose repeated use of the most objectionable racial slurs in his personal correspondence is curiously overlooked. Meanwhile, protesters in Portland, Oregon, in a 2020 demonstration that organizers called an “Indigenous Day of Rage,” tore down statues of former presidents Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.

Putting the past on trial is a foolish exercise. It involves flattering ourselves with an illusion of moral superiority while ignoring the obvious truth that ethical standards change over time. Besides, a historical diary is not a self-help book. We do not read Pepys to learn how best to live our lives, but for the exhilaration of experiencing a long-dead world through another person’s eyes.

In case you're wondering what the fools at the Washington Post are up to, this is the dumbest false equivalence you'll read today. Andrew Doyle is such a phony hack masquerading as someone with unique insight.
