A small mushroom grows out of a bed of green moss. Either side are some out of focus mushrooms.

We have some ideal conditions for fungi at the moment in the UK. Not sure of the ID, but possibly one of the Galerina species.

I love to sit and listen to the calls of Grouse, which seem to start around dawn. Photography wise there doesn't seem to be great numbers on the north Pennines moors this year.

Wood ants both scavenge and take down wasps and other invertebrates to feed young. I saw a wasp land on an ants nest and they killed it in seconds. Some pinned it down while others started to dissect it. Can't share much of the vid as its for a documentary, they are incredible predators up close.

I just heard a green sandpiper from my open kitchen door. Rushed upstairs to see three land by the pond.

Melts my head to think of these birds, which breed in crow nests in taiga forest and winter on hippo pools in Africa, stopping to say hello.

Fact will always be more amazing than fiction.

A Millstone carved out of solid rock lies abandoned in a forest. It has a crack running from the left side right up to the centre hole, which would have been devastating for the workers given they were carved with hand tools and the workers were often only paid for finished stones . Such stones were carved from Roman right times up to the early 1900's.

I found this old millstone in a Hamsterley forest recently. It looks as though it was near to completion before the crack was discovered. These were created with hand tools and given how much work went into it, it must have been devastating to have done all that work for nothing. #Teesdale
