Yes, I recognise that - I often feel the same way, but masking - which I don't recommend as a means to manage day to day things - sometimes helps me adopt a different persona that isn't as impacted by my own insecurities. But that's gonna be a conitnual improvement sorta thing.

Also - don't fall into the trap of letting people view your masking as a means of expecting perfection from you 24/7. It's an easy expectation for people to have, especially as being overly compassionate and empathetic is often used against us and is a common trait for a lot of Autistic people.

Oh and if you set a boundary: stick to it. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Some bridges need to demolished if they take advantage of you - I made quite a lengthy statement on my Twitter about that a few months ago :)

Ultimately, whatever you do - make sure you are kind to yourself above all else, and don't push yourself too hard out of your comfort zone too fast.

It's important to be kind to yourself when it comes to these sorts of things - learning nuance, small-talk and how to try and foster connections aren't easy. Masking is something I do constantly, and I spend my evenings over-analysing and fixating on small things that are of no consequence ...

Nuance is an important thing that needs to be learned by Autistic people when it comes to social situations, and people will learn this at different rates. A personal trait of mine is that I can sometimes hold people on a pedestal until they show me different and then I'll never forget the flaws.

I've had to teach myself it, it took years and several customer service roles and roles involving stakeholders to manage it. But it's not without its faults - I will notice details people prefer me to ignore and some people dislike that level of attention.
