Not only does Fall Aster delight us with its blooms, but it is also a very valuable plant in any garden. It attracts butterflies, native bees and beneficial insects. It is easy to grow and not fussy about soil as long as it has good drainage.

The beginning of the stunning flower show that Fall Aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) puts on every year around this time. It is truly an explosion of color.

Fall is the perfect time to plant shrubs and trees. This is a demonstration class on how to deal with container grown trees and shrubs. It will also cover planting, pruning, staking and fertilizing.

Warm season grasses are lovely at this time of year, and add so much texture, interest and movement.

There are many other inhabitants of the gardens as well. Lizards, spiders, other predator insects. Birds are also welcome visitors.

along with various liatris species and Cowpen Daisy (Verbesina encelioides).

The smaller butterflies, such as Hairstreaks, are a bit harder to spot but they are definitely present. Along with other larger butterflies such as Queens, Monarchs, Buckeyes and Emperors.

Bumble bees are as active as ever. Other native bees are in abundance as well. Liatris species add strong pops of color throughout the garden. Salvia azurea is still blooming and it is very popular with Bumble bees,

Today's highlights from the Pollinator Garden- Texas Gayfeather Liatris mucronata and Tall Goldenrod Solidago altissima. Both have very vibrant colors and both are fantastic for pollinators.

We had some Green Milkweed (Asclepias viridis) root from pots into the ground last year. Today I was happy to see two healthy Monarch butterfly caterpillars munching on it.

Great time to be planting. With cooler nights ahead, even on hot days, it is easier on the plants. And it is still enough time for the perennials to get established before the first hard freeze.

The rain has barely stopped, but Bumble bees are already busy pollinating azure Blue Sage (Salvia azurea). We did not get much rain, but between the cooler temperatures and the rain we did get, there is a noticeable difference.
