I truly believe the main flaw of modern Trek is that Trek shows have to have the long seasons for a couple episodes to safely be garbage a season. What a "good Trek episode" is varies with the cast and the era and finding it is a process of discovery that requires wrong moves.

Anson Mount the actor has charisma which helps offset the fact that Pike canonically does not. The problem is Kirk is, in the flattened version he’s turned into over the decades, all charisma so you need somebody with the juice at like…a generational level to go toe to toe.
