you can actually specify any of those techniques … on thing ai is really good at is implementing well-known well-established algorithms espeically in the linguistics / semantics domain … its like its natural environment

kati, I study this stuff … i’m not unaware of the resource usage … data centers use water for evaproative cooling and the electricity generation uses water for cooling … so are you saying we should get rid of EVs as well? These consume tons of electricty and require data centers which require water

if you think AI is a search engine, its understandable how the energy consumption equation might seem sus to you. Its not a search engine though. (i don’t think googles ai search is a great product though, dont really use it .. but llm responses can be cached just like web)

i find then energy use arguments to be sort of biased … in a world that has drive thru resturants where the total energy use of idiling cars is somewhere near the use of gen ai … why aren’t people equally fired up about drive-thrus?
