Trump’s Reckless Decision to Pursue Regime Change in Iran And the risks Democrats face if they fail to strongly oppose his war.

"There are multiple arguments that Democrats need to be making, including the fact that he’s acting illegally, and the fact that he’s acting strategically stupidly. So make all of those arguments. Don’t just ask for a briefing," says @mattduss.bsky.social. www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a...

there's a madman in the white house, he's illegally started a war, he's offered no explanation to the public other than an insane conspiracy theory that Iran somehow tried to interfere in last year's election, and the opposition leaders are releasing statements full of mixed support and concern

The president didn't bother to make the case for war in a marathon State of the Union address and then he fucked off to his sweaty gilded country club so he could literally phone in an unconstitutional war.

Every single Democrat needs to be screaming about this at full volume.

See, it's easy to denounce this straight up instead of politely asking the administration to pretty please give the American people an explanation when they have a sec

@RepJeffries on X: Donald Trump promised to keep America out of costly and endless foreign wars.

He is now doing the exact opposite in the Middle East.

Congress must vote on a War Powers resolution immediately.

While Republicans fully support Trump's war with Iran, Democratic leaders do not oppose it. There is no effective opposition.

Hakeem Jeffries is merely demanding that the administration "must explain itself to the American people and Congress" and "provide an ironclad justification."

Two categories of analysts who might take a step back, away from the microphone or keyboard, this weekend:

β€”Those who assured us that Trump was the real anti-war candidate.

β€”Those who assured us that invading Iraq was necessary and would work out great.

things every single republican president of your lifetime has done

- started a war in the middle east
- completely destroyed the economy

It would be cool to have a legislature that acted to defend its own constitutional prerogatives and, maybe as a treat, the interests of the people it represents too.

I think if I'd gotten away with attempting a coup, suffered no consequences for it, then won an election four years later, got away with executing citizens in the streets and foreigners in boats, and successfully abducted a head of state, I too might think I could just bomb my way to regime change

A judge just tossed out Columbia University's disciplinary actions against 22 students over the 2024 Hamilton Hall occupation, finding the school relied on sealed arrest records and held individuals responsible for group actions, violating its own rules.

How Kansas Republicans weaponized the law to target 300 trans driver's license holders SB 244 was put into effect virtually overnight, causing chaos, panic and fear in the trans community.

New β€” I spoke to eight trans people in Kansas about the new state law that invalidated their driver’s licenses overnight, what’s it’s like to live there right now, plus details of two DMV emails exclusively obtained by The Handbasket that shed light on the law’s chaotic and cruel rollout:

I had a similar experience teaching a public-writing seminar at Penn for four years. The Army folks were consistently among the best students, and they were pursuing subjects they couldn’t access through the military’s own education system. This seems like a real own-goal by DoD.

The total lack of consequences for GOP politicians' lying about universities & professors is a cancer on society. Robin Vos & Steve Nass & Scott Walker have been doing it in WI for 15 years. Now it's national. If Democrats <ever> spoke like this about anyone, it would be a nonstop national scandal.

This is <exactly> why I never want to hear from James Carville ever again about the "faculty lounge." It feeds the far right authoritarian lies & the Herrenvolk democracy nonsense. No Democrat (or democrat) should use that language when discussing professors or universities ever again. Full stop.

First of all -- fuck you, Pete. None of this is happening in the faculty lounges of your fever dreams.

Second, I've taught military personnel in our PhD programs and if you think slamming the door to Harvard and Princeton in their faces is "having their back" you're even dumber than you sound.

Any Democrat in a position of power should oppose this loudly and immediately. Make antitrust laws a campaign issue. Fight it every way imaginable. Do not hand over mass media to a creepy dad-son dyad who want to cozy up to an increasingly loathed president bent on maintaining power illegitimately.

This is not how the Security Council works. Our unaccomplished, inarticulate, unqualified Third Lady has no business there and it’s an insult to the world to send her.

The Constitution clearly gives Congress the power to spend taxpayer funds, and no law allows the president to halt if he feels some US states aren’t being β€œgood stewards” of the money.

In case there’s any confusion on this, the Impoundment Control Act forbids it.

Taxation without representation.
