Ecocide in Ukraine – ATHENA PDF ATHENA PDF with book-cover thumbnail.

I recently reviewed @daryatsymbalyuk.bsky.social's situated, transdisciplinary account of the environmental disaster brought by Russia's full scale invasion and its wider implications in the context of the region's extractivist histories.

On the plane of immanence between the US and Romania, Ro sends university students trafficked by their profs and the US maintains the predators afloat, academics and the Tates all together in the tight embrace of desire and body counts.

Iran, the Greatest Inconvenience: On the Eternal Silence of a Contemporary Left - TripleAmpersand Journal (&&&) I begin with what looks like a detour, an old television memory that used to put a smile on our faces. It is also a compressed model of a political reflex that keeps repeating in Iran. When I was youn...

"Anything that looks messy becomes forbidden, because it might be used, misread, exploited. This is how a left becomes politically colorblind. It loses the ability to distinguish solidarity with people from alignment with states, to oppose the Imperium without granting dictatorships a free pass..."

If a country ran a militarised and masked force with minimal oversight and accountability to harass, detain, and murder minorities and politically opposed citizens, that country would be internationally denounced, and sanctions would likely follow. So how come no state leader speaks out against ICE?

I wrote about the irruption of ontological difference into the geological register by putting Heidegger and Deleuze together, running their differences through stratigraphy & Earth System Science, and asking what happens to difference when extinction removes the relationality we take for granted?

International law died many deaths over the last 26 years: in Iraq, in Palestine, in Ukraine... Every time, people accepted it because the violations happened in “peripheral” places. And now, as it always does throughout history, the periphery has caught up with the center, and it looks grim.

True about great powers and leverage. But the millions who rose, the thousands murdered, the street momentum are real. The strength of empire feeds on the ritual reaffirmation of hierarchy and inevitability, even when masked as critique.

Democracy, however fragile, can still be built from within.

Ideology is now adopted in TikTok bits for a targeted purpose and dropped within 24-48h. It's no longer even about "liberating" and "bringing democracy." I'd say that even the oil/resource messaging is weak, overtaken by my hemisphere, my backyard discourse.
Basically, domination is its own message.

Neptun Deep: Start of drilling operations
YouTube video by OMV Petrom Neptun Deep: Start of drilling operations

The Romanian-Austrian version of "drill, baby, drill" served with a wrapping of the new security-sovereignty-strategy EU discourses. The largest natural gas extraction project in Europe de facto secures a radically insecure century ahead, all financed with EU money.

I really enjoyed reading and reviewing Negative Life by @jttremblay.bsky.social and @stevenswarbrick.bsky.social for Ecozon@. A wonderful book that conceptualizes art and extinction beyond pastoral narratives of interconnectedness and exalted (green) consciousness!

In Romania, we entered the post-election phase when, aside from further limiting access to services & education through ineffective budget cuts, the Beautiful Decent Cultural Gatekeepers gather to insult those they've been gatekeeping from with stale metaphors. Annoying bc I like that Ionescu play.

Aesthetics of Control and Absence in the Vajont Disaster and Giovanni Michelucci’s Chiesa Monumentale di Santa Maria Immacolata | Itinera Estetica del controllo e dell'assenza nel disastro del Vajont e nella Chiesa Monumentale di Santa Maria Immacolata di Giovanni Michelucci

I've been working on developing a critical ecosemiotic approach for the arts. A preliminary framework is the one I used in my article on Vajont & Michelucci's church. Still work in progress but for now, there are 2 regimes: 1. present-focused, vernacular-knowledge; 2. technocratic, future-projecting
