Full disclosure; Iβve worked with awesome interns at studios Iβve been employed at in the past. Those placements were all done as part of university degrees and I think were run in good faith & ultimately benefited the interns more than the studio. I still think there are better alternatives though

Yeah, but even then not many people here seem to know this. And thereβs definitely been a few game studios here that have outright exploited internships for free labour.
So I think itβs fair to be very sceptical of the practice, regardless the current state of the industry
The only other way an unpaid internships is legal is if itβs done as part of achieving a recognised qualification (some Universities here have βindustry based learningβ semesters as part of their degrees and will audit/check any businesses that offer placements)

They are only legal here if they are done primarily for the benefit of the intern not the business offering it. One way to abide by this is to have the intern NOT work on anything that someone could be employed to do
