And yes, the UK is absolutely at risk, directly through extreme events here at home, and indirectly through trade linkages and financial markets.
Quantifying these international spillovers is an active area of research @bennett-innovate.bsky.social
There are lots of ways that planning & land management can help (fire breaks, fire resistant building design & materials, firefighting infrastructure), but:
1. Waiting until things are on fire isn't good enough
2. No amount of adaptation can overcome runaway climate change - reducing CO2 matters
Climate change reduces space for people and the economy.
Places that were viable 50 yrs ago are less so now. This will get worse.
It starts with extreme heat and fires.
Next, insurance markets retreat, meaning people and busineses can't get cover.
It ends with depopulation and abandonment
A sobering message last night on extreme heat and wildfires, with @krishgm.bsky.social asking a brutally important question: 'does this mean we can't build homes and infrastructure in at risk places?'
