Decided to write about one of my favourite novels - and a 90s SF classic - for @nerdsofafeather.bsky.social this month.
China Mountain Zhang is a prescient, brilliantly drawn collage of a China-dominated future from the perspective of people living that future at ground level.
That comma should be before the 'but'...

This is amazing.
And, not the point I know but, blimey is always an excellent word.

Way to show girls and women - yet again - that their trauma means nothing and they may as well not bother trying to get justice.

Thank you all.
I'm still testing negative so I'll keep staying away from him until he tests negative too.
Luxon "misspoke". Three times. With prepared notes. Said the same thing three times followed by "I don't know how I could be any clearer".
That kind of misspoke.
Hipkins going all out for my dying bestie, the international rules-based order: "For the US to claim that it was a preemptive act of self-defense because they were aware that Israel was going to attack... shows absolute contempt for international law."

A covid question.
My husband got covid from my daughter and tested positive on Friday last week. He's symptom-free now but is still testing strongly positive.
Is he still contagious?
I'm assuming he is and he's quarantining in our spare bedroom.
Itβs so odd. I feel embarrassed/ashamed seeing how poorly he functions, but he seems oblivious.
He did look uncomfortable yesterday - even before Henryβs question his voice was all thick as if he had a dry mouth. And his whole βlook, I donβt know how I can be any clearerβ schtick wasnβt convincing.
π youngest child knows whatβs what. I bet a few people are thinking similar things after watching that press conference yesterday.

Great to see this, and see some of the experts from NZ who were critical in correcting outdated advice represented.
Also noting it was often vulnerable communities/ those with early experience of Long Covid who were early adopters and pushed these comms online too, consistently ahead of governments.
Drab and vulgar about sums him up.

He must have an absolutely cast iron ego.
His fellow MPs must loathe him in all his arrogance and ignorance.
So exciting!
When they announced they had to close, I rushed into town and wandered around the stacks all teary-eyed about it. It was one of my favourite Wellington places.
I hope the new fit out is beautiful and comfortable and inviting.
Oof. I just read your post in the most uncharitable, pedantic way possible, and I gotta tell ya: it's not looking good for you.

βHow do I know,β she said at last, βthat you are what you seem to be?β
βYou don't,β Said he. βI don't know what I seem, to you.β
Yes. He doesn't cope well with even the smallest pushback because he's got nothing to say except his meagre little talking points.
He gets angry and patronising in an effort to cover his lack of knowledge.
Chris Hipkins's response to the question does Labour support the strikes on Iran. A flat out 'no'.

What a pathetic stance for a head of state.
Basically, βIβm too uninformed and bereft of a moral compass to comment.β
Again, there is no moral test that Luxon canβt fail.

Yes. Helen Clark's govt sure as fuck didn't. She's appalled by this govt's stance.
Being able to lie unblushingly is his one true talent.
He does neither of those things. He learns a few phrases by rote and that's the extent of it.
He's quite the laziest, most incurious and disinterested PM I've ever experienced.
#nzpol
Does Luxon feel shame or embarrassment I wonder. Does he ever realise how poorly equipped he is to be PM?
I'd be in bed with the blankets over my head if I'd had a shocker like his press conference this arvo.
And then I'd get up, study briefing papers, talk to experts, and do my best to be informed
Excellent question. You cut right through the script he was running.

He is sooooo out of his depth.
This is just inane blather, words falling out of his face to make himself feel/look good. So when Henry follows up as if the words actually mean things and have implications, he completely glitches.

βThe impact on disabled people and older New Zealanders is immediate and severe.β
One of those reads that underline there are very real people on the other end of this governmentβs consistent targeting of vulnerable communities - and those people are badly hurting.

He's really, really bad at this. Good work by Henry taking him at his word and asking an entirely logical follow-up question on that basis.
