Opinion | Primaries are good for Dems John Nichols: Over the past 50 years, primaries have rarely if ever been an impediment to Democratic Party prospects in Wisconsin.

Primaries are not a threat.

They are measures of political strength and dynamism for Democrats in states like Wisconsin.

Dem Govs Pat Lucey in 1970, Tony Earl in 1982, Jim Doyle in 2002 and Tony Evers in 2018 all won their initial terms after contested primaries.

Competition made them stronger.

This week 26 senators — a majority of the Senate Democratic Caucus — backed Sanders’s resolution to stop arming the Israeli forces that are responsible for death and starvation in Gaza.

Tony Evers Did What Too Many Senior Democrats Have Not Wisconsin’s governor was well positioned to win a third term. Instead, he cleared the way for a new generation of Democrats to run. Others should take note.

Important lesson from Wisconsin:

WI Gov Tony Evers had united Dem support for a 2026 reelection bid. Top Republicans were avoiding the race. Evers was poised to win.

Yet, at 73, he stood down in order to spend more time with his grandkids—and, in so doing, opened the way for generational change.

If Tony Evers had run for a 3rd term as governor of WI, he would have won. Easily. Instead, he’s standing down because he sincerely wants to spend more time with his family.

Ultimately, he will be remembered as one of Wisconsin’s finest governors. And, undoubtedly, as the most amiable of them all.

Trump is pressuringTexas officials to immediately redraw congressional district lines to reduce the number of Democratic-leaning constituencies in the state. If the president’s scheme succeeds, Democrats could lose as many as five seats that they now hold in Texas.
