#WritingTip: Writing in a new genre @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social? Start by dissecting models to understand what kind of content successful writers typically include and what structural choices they make. Annotate accordingly - remember you're not reading to comprehend but rather to emulate.

#WritingTip: Creating rituals around your writing time can help you switch into work mode. One trick is having a specific phrase that you say when you sit down to write and another that you say when you've finished for the day. For instance, you might start the day with "Let's rock and roll!"

In graduate school, many seminars include a book review as a writing assignment, and advanced graduate students often see them as an ideal starting place for trying to get published. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the generic conventions of the book review. We will also address the rhetorical and political considerations one needs to make when critiquing senior colleagues, as well as the practicalities of getting placed in a journal. Wednesday, July 23 at 3:00 pm EST. Register here.

#WritingTip: It's easy to forget your argument in the thick of a project. Capturing your central claim in 2-3 sentences and putting it at the top of your document can serve as a helpful reminder that you can turn to if you feel lost so you can refocus on the evidence and sub-claims that matter most.

#WritingTip: Feedback can be stressful. What do you do? Should you trash it?! Read each comment, decide how to respond, and create a specific task (e.g. add a footnote, draft a paragraph about X, etc). Next, pick an approach. Do easy tasks first to build momentum. Or, get the hardest one over with.
