a hard life being a statue

I called it a statue, but it was only a weather-beaten stone, its human features an accident of nature. I still brought it food and treated it like my only friend. One day, it spoke.
"Run home," it said.
That night, they found a dead man. His phone had pictures of me. His blood stained my statue.

At 13, I made countless Beatles mixtapes. Organizing their songs into orderly categories made me feel safe.
One night, as I played my tapes, I heard a voice under the music. I put my ear to the speaker.
“I’m in your closet,” it said. “Open the door.”
Somehow, finding the closet empty scared me more.

My brother was always broke, but he had an enviable music collection. For gifts, he lovingly created mixed tapes — a small cost. When I bought a Eurail pass to explore Europe solo, my favorite travel tape from him included The Pretenders, which I listened to over and over and over and over and …

I was mistaken to think that the house next door was abandoned. When raccoons peered through a hole in the roof, I knew I had neighbors. There, they had a Birds Eye view of their world.

Once I chose a hill to die on, I cast the spell to raise trees around it. My forest gave me all I’d need. Wood for a hut, game to eat, a barrier to keep the witch hunters (and everyone else) out. The woods asked only one thing: my life on a day of their choosing. Each night, I watch for the flames.
