Well, I believe it’ll be more applicable than the binary concept in less studied taxa and regions, as it is less evidence demanding when it comes to questions like “how did the species arrive in the focal area” etc.

Thank you, Camilla Colding-Jørgensen for leading this important work, and to @jcsvenning.bsky.social and @r-ejrnaes.bsky.social for the collaboration, which was funded by the 15 June Foundation

Using the flora of Denmark, we show that a large proportion of species are treated as 'native' by one source and as 'non'native' by others, i.e. are of uncertain status. Using a graduated definition, most of these species end up in the 'near-native' category

Native and near-native species share most of their Pleistocene history. Are near-natives may well be our new natives under global climate change.

A graduated nativeness definition for overcoming dilemmas and difficulties of vascular plant species Nativeness is a concept central to biodiversity conservation and invasion biology, but there are several problems related to a classic binary nativeness definition. Nativeness cannot be binary, if is to make sense and be practically applicable at the scale of countries.
We propose a graduated definition, in which species native to neighbouring territories are considered "near-native"

Læs videre her:

Just out in PNAS!

We used multi-taxon data to model virtual forest landscapes.

Forest withdrawn from timber harvesting are needed in a much higher share than they currently are in Europe, and extensive forests contribute less than expected to multi-taxon diversity.

Sweden and Finland have increased logging levels to such a point that their forests are now a net source of emissions.
Their Prime Ministers are asking to be exempt from EU #Climate target so that they keep going. Oh and they blame climate change.

I first got a message from ResearchGate: "Your work has been cited". When I realized the nature of that citation, I reported the fraudulent content to ResearchGate. Their response: "we have decided *not* to remove the reported content"

In their Table 2, the authors claim to summarize data from our paper and 14 others. But the figures do not come from our study of plants, insects and fungi (how could they?). The authors surely haven’t read, nor understood, our study. But much worse, their data must be considered *fabricated*

Disturbing citation
In 2022, we published a study on *consumers*, i.e. animals and fungi that consume biomass produced by other organisms, e.g. plants.
Now, our paper has been cited in what claims to be a metaanalysis of "Consumer Satisfaction in Live Streaming E-commerce". Far out!

We followed primary succession of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on a man-made island, Peberholm, 2010-2016. AMF communities diversified through more and more deterministic processes. They remained less diverse than on nearby island Saltholm.

It's about sparing of large, contiguous areas for wild nature, reduction of GHG emissions and nutrient losses to freshwater and marine ecosystems, in order to stay within planetary boundaries downscaled to DK and meet agreed policy targets.
