Quote about emotional labour, recognising, supporting, and managing emotions in uncertain times by Professor Pam Smith, RCN Fellow, on a Royal College of Nursing branded image.

How do we keep the light shining to value and protect the emotional labour of nursing?

RCN Fellow Professor Pam Smith explores the impact of emotional labour on nursing staff and patients in her recent blog. ➑️ buff.ly/U5K65Id

Image of a blue and white pamphlet which features a hand-drawn nurse addressing a small crowd of stylised drawings of people. Text on the cover reads, "Public Relations Guide", "Canadian Nurses Association".

This striking 1956 pamphlet offers instructions for effective public relations, and reassures nurses that "90% of PR is doing the job well".

Looking for more nursing history? Our pamphlet collection is a rich resource- browse more in the library catalogue by filtering to "Pamphlet Collection".

An image featuring a late-20th century Meta brand stove consisting of three silver coloured parts - lid, pot with handles and fuel stand.

To the right of the stove is an image of a little rectangular box, the packaging for 'The Ideal Solid Meta Fuel'. Above the name is a colourful graphic of one of the fuel tablets aflame. The bottom of the box is visible showing the 'made in Switzerland' label and patent numbers for Britain, U.S., India, Canada and two more which are not readable in the image.

Furthest to the right of the image is a side view of the fuel box, showing the brand name 'META' and 'marque dΓ©posΓ©e' [registered trademark] and an illustration of the stove mentioned above.

Object of the Month – β€˜Meta’ stove and Solid Fuel, c. 1960-1975

Check out this handy, 3-part stove and solid fuel tablets.

We think it was carried around by a District Nurse or Midwife to safely sterilise equipment before tending to their patients. What do you think?

A watercolour painting featuring a cottage, vegetation, and what might be a fort.

This miniature watercolour painting, allegedly by Florence Nightingale, is kept in the RCN Archive. Looking at the plants and lefthand building, it may depict an Indian rural scene. Explore the RCN Archive online buff.ly/OabZ4P4
