Like, imagine evolving into a more evasive fighter using capoeira, or making this stonewall of a tank who uses Bajiquan, or maybe you do make a brawler who fights like a total scumbag thug but puts his everything in each punch.

My point being, I feel like martial arts in fighting games can be expanded on more than with just ki blasts or temu kamehamehas. Imagine a martial artist class in a ttrpg whose subclasses are based on which real world fighting style you pick.

Final Fantasy Monks are an interesting case too since it’s highly dependent on what game you’re playing. Some are much more traditional monks from the earlier games, but some like Sabin and Zell are more strictly focused on the martial arts. Some strike a good balance like Tifa and the FFXIV MNK.

You can hone you basic techniques to perfect with Striker, focus on maybe more dirty fighting with Brawler, or focus in on throws and control with Grappler, it’s really honestly cool. And it’s not like these classes can’t keep up with the other maelstroms of particle effects in DFO.

I think DFO has a good progression. The Fighter class does have an ascension that’s focused on the cool ki blasts and everything with Nen Master, but all the others are focused on iterating on the martial arts aspect of the class.

I think DnD monk is a good place to start. A large majority of monk’s subclasses deal with it being given these like, crazy spirit powers or “not magic” and don’t get me wrong that is cool, but I think that you could do more with a martial artist. Hence why my favorite subclass is Open Hand.

Been thinking a bit about the idea of martial artists in RPGs, both video games and ttrpg and it makes me kinda realize how limited in scope the ideas can be in some cases when it comes to progression and iteration.

I think I miss the old days.
