Keeping our communities safe requires a holistic approach: investing in prevention, supporting effective law enforcement, and fostering a strong, connected community. We can’t solve our problems with any one solution - it’s going to take all of us.

I’m fighting for the Tennesseans who make up the backbone of our communities - working families. Their contributions and work are what makes our communities what they are today. They deserve all of the pay and respect that should come with that.

Hard-working Tennesseans deserve to earn enough to live a decent life, free from the constant stress of financial insecurity. They shouldn't have to just live paycheck to paycheck. They deserve to thrive.

The Trump administration’s actions, whether it be sending ICE into our cities or cutting Medicaid away from working families, is making all of us worse off. The only solution in the short term is going to be dedicated local leadership that is willing to fight these efforts from the ground up.

Every shooting in our city tears our communities apart bit by bit - making us feel unsafe in the very streets we call home. That cannot continue to be the state of things. We need real comprehensive change and leadership willing to make tough political choices to make all of our lives better off.

If Trump and his Republican allies are willing to send the military and federal agencies into our communities to disrupt them and tear them apart, we need local leaders who will stand up against them. We can’t afford to be neutral in the face of these actions.

Yesterday, I laid my father, JB Smiley Sr., to rest.

The grief was heavy, but what rose above it was pride. Person after person shared how he quietly showed up, helped, and loved. No spotlight, just steady goodness.

He used to say, “I’m you, and you are me.” Now I understand.
