The Library of Celsus, Ephesus, Turkey. The library was built as a tomb and monument for Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, a Roman senator, and funded by his son, Gaius Julius Aquila.

The Library of Celsus, Ephesus, Turkey. It was designed to store around 12,000 scrolls, making it the third-largest library in the ancient world. A fire in 262 AD, potentially caused by an invasion or earthquake, and centuries of further seismic activity destroyed the library and its contents. The facade was reconstructed by Austrian archaeologists in the 1970s, preserving this significant landmark. Today, the Library of Celsus stands as a vital part of the Ephesus UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains one of its most recognizable structures.

Photographed at Birmingham Museums Collection Centre, Birmingham, UK. The Collection Centre is where Birmingham Museums keep all the artefacts that are not actually on display in any of the city’s museums. It isn’t generally open to the public but can be accessed on occasional heritage days. It’s basically a massive warehouse filled with an eclectic mix of weird and wonderful treasures, such as this gruesome sculpture of a severed head on a plate.

Self portrait in a style inspired by Picasso following the rediscovery of the forgotten sketchbook. Black gloss house paint and acrylics on an old ceramic floor tile (October 2025). Painting on the tile seemed appropriate as Picasso often painted on pottery and ceramics.

A page from a forgotten sketch book recently rediscovered whilst searching my shelves for something else. Here’s a sketch of the entrance to the famous Abbey Road Studios where the Beatles recorded the album that bears its name. I was in the area to watch cricket during the summer of 2017 at another legendary place, Lords, but like many Beatles fans before me, just had to make a detour to see the studios and cross the road using the same zebra crossing that the Fab Four were photographed on for the album cover.

Although at first glance the horses in this photograph may look real they are in fact sculptures made from scrap metal by the British Ironworks Centre and seen at their sculpture park in Shropshire, UK. It’s a lot easier to capture one of the sculptures jumping a fence than it would be a real horse!

Pages from a forgotten sketch book, recently rediscovered whilst searching my shelves for something else. Sketches of Edgbaston, home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, done whilst also watching the cricket some years ago. Today is the final day of the last game of the 2025 cricket season at the home of the Bears. Fortunately, I’ll still get my cricket fix throughout the winter when attending net sessions for Warwickshire members at the indoor cricket centre that stands alongside the stadium.
