#Bales2026MovieChallenge -peace
Paths of Glory (1957)
The best war movies expose the absurdity and brutality of war and thus advocate for peace. Here Kubrick focuses on corruption and injustice in military leadership. Itβs brilliant.
#MarchMovieChallenge - witch
Bell Book and Candle (1958)
Stewart and Novak had two classic films in 1958. Vertigo and this fun fantasy about a modern-day witch in New York who casts a love spell on her neighbor. Has a retro, cozy cult following.

Conclave (2024)
Conclave takes a quiet, procedural event and turns it into a high stakes, tense, character driven drama. Thanks for a fun month

#FebruaryMovieChallenge -disco
Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (1994)
Bernardette is old, tired & trans. Bob is rough and flawed. Disco tracks by Gloria Gaynor &Village People.

#Bales2026MovieChallenge - Visually Stunning
Mishima: a Life in Four Chapters (1985)
This unconventional biography of sorts of the controversial Japanese artist and political activist is a visual feast.
#FebruaryMovieChallenge - Tennis Shoes
Prefontaine (1997)
Both major movies about Steve Prefontaine, came out in 1997. Without Limits was better received, but I prefer the more intimate and raw Prefontiane. Leto is somehow both intense and vulnerable.
@omacolt
#Bales2026MovieChallenge - great soundtrack
#FebruaryMovieChallenge - someone is wrongly accused
Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Quasimodo is falsely blamed by Judge Frollo (and society). And the Menken/Schwartz dark and operatic soundtrack is perfect.

#Bales2026moviechallenge -love triangle or messy relationship
#FebruaryMovieChallenge - works at a fast food place
Better off dead (1985)
Lane works at Pig Burgers & wants Beth. Beth wants Roy. Ricky wants Monique. Beth now wants Lane. Lane ends up with Monique.

#Bales2026MovieChallenge -makes you laugh out loud
Bringing up Baby (1938)
Pure classic and joyful screwball comedy. Watching Grant unravel under Hepburnβs relentless energy is comedy gold.
#FebruaryMovieChallenge - George Washington
Hamilton (2020)
Iβve seen Hamilton live, but I first saw the movie version during the Covid pandemic. I find it brilliant. Special to me is the newfound appreciation for Washington.

#FebruaryMovieChallenge - amputee
I lost my Body (2019)
Strange but profoundly moving film that includes a severed hand that journeys across Paris to reunite with its body. One of my top 5 movies of 2019. That is saying something as 2019 was a very strong year for film.

#Bales2026MovieChallenge - a movie that left you thinking for days
The last black man in San Francisco (2019)
This film left me feeling quiet, but heavy. Reflective about and a longing for home and platonic love from friends. It holds up on rewatch.

#Bales2026MovieChallenge -forgiveness
Princess Mononoke (1997)
Forgiveness is about the most beautiful thing a human can experience. Ashitaka refuses to hate those who harm him. He continually seeks understanding instead of revenge.
#FebruaryMovieChallenge - astronaut
Ad Astra (2019)
So glad I finally saw this last year. Introspective and minimalist. It spoke to me.

#FebruaryMovieChallenge - record player
Billy Elliot (2000)
In the opening scene Billy carefully sets up the record player to play cosmic dancer and begins dancing. We sense we are about to experience joy. And we do. β€οΈ

#Bales2026MovieChallenge -the ending changes everything.
Memento (2000)
Nolanβs breakthrough remains my favorite Nolan film. The twist is in the structure itself which, by the end, makes us reinterpret the entire narrative.
#Bales2026MovieChallenge -a second chance
7 Up (1964) - 63 Up (2019)
You think Boyhood was ambitious? Try this cool British documentary series that follows 14 kids age 7 and then again every 7 years as they age. Thats commitment.
#FebruaryMovieChallenge - telescope
Mary Poppins (1964)
Admiral Boom keeps watch on the neighborhood with his trusty telescope.

#FebruaryMovieChallenge - VW Beetle
Harold and Maude (1971)
Among the cars Maude steals is the priestβs VW beetle. Harold (RIP) wonders if itβs wrong, but Maude is simply serving as a gentle reminder of βhere today gone tomorrow so donβt get attached to things.β

#Bales2026MovieChallenge - a second chance
Two of a kind (1983)
God agrees to give the world a second chance if two selfish criminals can be atoned through love. Cool idea executed terribly. But we did get the ONJ banger βTwist of Fateβ πΆβ€οΈ

I just watched this last night and it will be with me for a long time. Grief is part of healing. It stays with us even when we learn to live, and maybe even thrive, with that grief
